Pattern Preferences: Insights from an Environmental Psychologist

Book Review

Designology: How to Find Your PlaceType and Align Your Life with Design, by environmental psychologist Dr. Sally Augustin, reveals how your home influences you and how to optimally decorate to support your needs and preferences. There’s a section about color, plus insights about how we respond to patterns.

For example, most people prefer:

bullet point  small-sized patterns on wallpaper
bullet point  moderately complicated patterns
bullet point  symmetrical patterns
bullet point  horizontal and vertical lines (vs. diagonal ones)

Also, she says that we associate ascending diagonal lines with activity and descending diagonals with relaxation. Good to know!
